One of the most widely used techniques within human resource assessment contexts is the simulation. Simulation allows the candidate to be engaged in a job that presents the same stimuli and problems that he would find in reality. The in-basket exercise, a paper-and-pencil measure of administrative ability, is an assessment technique. The term “in-basket” refers to the “inbox” of e-mail. It is some sort of individual role-playing, in which a series of operational decision-making problems are simulated in a very realistic way. The in-basket exercise consists of a stack of letters, memos, reports and related materials that are presumed to have accumulated in the in-basket of a manager. The participant is directed to deal with the materials as if he or she were actually on the job as the manager.
The simulation must take place in a limited time, and the candidate must know how long it will be. Generally, the time allowed for the exercise is less than what would be necessary to deal with the amount of information received. However, it represents an important tool to identify organizational skills and ability to cope with emergencies.
